One thing I've always questioned from that article: is there a difference in the tactics you should use once you approach a certain size/level of brand recognition.
At larger companies, people know where they're getting, but at smaller companies is there more potential value in the pre-prompt because you need to educate consumers more because they've never heard of you.
I don't know if I could ever validate that thought on a large scale, but it's been sitting in the back of my head since I read that article years ago :)
Fair point! That would make sense to me. I also imagine that some app categories naturally see higher opt-in rates because people literally need/want the notifications (e.g., dating, trading, etc.)
Awesome insights, Jacob! 👏 Transparency, timing and psychology are truly boosting push notification opt-ins!
One challenge apps often face is understanding user behavior immediately after download, especially when designing effective opt-in flows. Leveraging real-world context (like identifying if a user is walking, driving a car, sitting or lying in bed) can lead to more tailored and well-timed permission requests. Something worth considering to refine opt-in strategies! 💪🏼
Can i share your articles?
Of course! Just share a link or something so people can come back and find me :)
Some cool examples!
This is easily missed: Showing the push prompt immediately is an underrated tactic. It keeps things super simple and avoids a lot of complications.
This reminds me of the article "All the Advice You’ve Read on Push Permission Prompts is Wrong": https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/all-advice-youve-read-push-permission-prompts-wrong-john-egan/
Yes! John Egan the OG! So many gems in his blog: http://jwegan.com/

This article has some benchmarks, but I'm always skeptical of this type of data: https://www.businessofapps.com/marketplace/push-notifications/research/push-notifications-statistics/

Consider tools like ContextSDK for that :)
