Hey there, it’s Jacob at Retention.Blog 👋
I got tired of reading high-level strategy articles, so I started writing actionable advice I would want to read.
Every week I share practical learnings you can apply to your business.
Marketing and growth are constantly changing. How do we keep up with it all?
The best way I’ve found is to read, and read a lot.
But there is so much content out there, where do you start? You need a filter so you’re not consuming crap.
You know what they say, you are what you eat…
Subscribe to a few of these newsletters (or all of them!) and you’ll never be left behind.
Mobile Growth Stack and Phiture Blog
Created by Andy Carvell and Moritz Daan. Many very useful articles and blogs in the archives. Search for things like retention or email. Sometimes it's a little hard to find articles now that they’ve combined it with Phiture’s website. Some of my favorite are:
An amazing resource of thoughtful guidance, mostly from his work leading Growth Engineering at Pinterest. It’s not updated very frequently, so click to the Archive and find a post that looks interesting or relevant to you. One of my favorites is Managing Your Growth Team’s Portfolio: A Step-by-Step Guide
Written by Casey Winters of Grubhub, Pinterest, and Eventbrite, but has worked with/advised many more. Talks mostly about product strategy, but valuable for anyone in growth. Always very thoughtful and interesting. One of my recent favorites was from when Eventbrite was trying to survive through a global pandemic: Fire Every Bullet.
Sylvain Gauchet has created an amazing newsletter that pulls out growth gems from podcasts, newsletters, and other marketing/growth content shared. It’s a great source of quick insights as he reads and listens and pulls out the tips for you.
Brian Balfour was one of the early thought leaders in growth. I don’t believe this is updated anymore (in favor of Reforge content) but is packed full of evergreen insights on growing products and companies.
It only makes sense to share this right after Brian Balfour’s blog since he founded Reforge. The free Reforge blog content is pretty phenomenal and a testament to the quality of their paid content.
Andrew Chen and Brian Balfour started a newsletter and course which eventually became Reforge. Andrew Chen also doesn’t post quite as frequently as he used to, but it’s full of so many gems.
Building a growth team at your company? This post is a must-read.
Lenny’s Newsletter has quickly become a juggernaut of a product newsletter, Slack community, and Podcast. For anyone in Product, it should be required reading. For others in growth, it still should be required reading. One of my favorite recent things from Lenny is his podcast with Madhavan Ramanujam on The art and science of pricing
I actually just bought Madhavan’s book based on this podcast: Monetizing Innovation: How Smart Companies Design the Product Around the Price
A relatively new newsletter, but Adam Fishman has been at Lyft, Patreon, Imperfect Foods, and Reforge, so is a wealth of information. I’m excited to follow along and see where he takes it.
Have a subscription product? ProfitWell is a must-follow as is Patrick Campbell, ProfitWell founder. He also appears on many podcasts and other blogs, so search his name for a wealth of knowledge on subscription monetization.
Eric Seufert has a mix of paid and free newsletter content, but he is an OG in the game. He skews more to the acquisition side, but has amazing macro views of the industry as a whole. I really appreciated his insights during all the Apple privacy changes and the downstream impact.
I think Reid DeRamus has slowed down on his publishing, but there is still great content in the archives. He worked for a lot of big streaming companies so if you have a media-related product, I’m sure you’ll enjoy.
Growth Waves by Daphne Tideman
Daphne focuses on broader marketing and growth (not just apps), but is a great writer, so you’ll learn something. I enjoyed her post on unconventional landing page tactics.
What are your favorite retention, growth, and marketing resources? Let me know!
I need something new to read :)
